Surprised by Hope

N.T. Wright

SURPRISED BY HOPE

NT Wright is easily one of my favorite theologians, writers, thinkers and scholars. In his newest addition to his ever growing list of books, Surprised by Hope opens the readers eyes and heart to much of what the Bible has to say about resurrection, the Christian hope, life after death and life AFTER life after death.

Publisher's Weekly writes: Wright, one of the greatest, and certainly most prolific, Bible scholars in the world, will touch a nerve with this book. What happens when we die? How should we think about heaven, hell, purgatory and eternal life? Wright critiques the views of heaven that have become popular in Western culture, especially the assumption of the continuance of the soul after death in a sort of blissful non-bodily existence. This is simply not Christian teaching, Wright insists. The New Testament's clear witness is to the resurrection of the body, not the migration of the soul.

If you're looking for a fresh perspective on the issues of Christian hope, resurrection, and life AFTER life after death, then you need to check out Surprised by Hope. By far one of my favorites reads of the year so far.

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

Eugene Peterson

A LONG OBEDIENCE IN THE SAME DIRECTION

As a society, we are no less obsessed with the immediate than when Eugene Peterson first wrote this Christian classic. If anything, email and the Internet may have intensified our quest for the quick fix. But Peterson's time-tested prescription for discipleship remains the same--a long obedience in the same direction.

Tucked away in the Hebrew Psalter, Peterson discovered "an old dog-eared songbook," the Songs of Ascents that were sung by pilgrims on their way up to worship in Jerusalem. In these songs (Psalms 120-134) Peterson finds encouragement for modern pilgrims as we learn to grow in worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing.

Flickering Pixels

Shane Hipps

FLICKERING PIXELS

Whether we know it or not, technology shapes life -- and in many ways shapes our faith.  In Flickering Pixels (Zondervan 2009) author Shane Hipps explains how TV, texting, Facebook, cell phones, Twitter, and the web affect our relationship with God.

His catch phrase, “The medium is the message” is one of many powerful concepts that Hipps uses to demonstrate the secret power technology has over our lives and even our faith.

From the Back Cover

Not all is dire, however, as Hipps shows us that hidden things have far less power to shape us when they aren’t hidden anymore. We are only puppets of our technology if we remain asleep. Flickering Pixels will wake us up—and nothing will look the same again.

If you are looking for a provocative and thought provoking read, this is it.

Crazy Love

Francis Chan

CRAZY LOVE

Have you ever wondered if we're missing it?

It's crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe-the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor-loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss.

Whether you've verbalized it yet or not, we all know something's wrong.

Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts-it's falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis describes it, you will never be the same.

Because when you're wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.
